Wanneroo locals will benefit from a new Sports Hub, after Council endorsed the concept design for the proposed facility at its June meeting.

The new Sports Hub will sit beside the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre on Scenic Drive in Wanneroo, and will feature two multi-sport courts, boxing and calisthenics facilities, meeting rooms, a kitchen and storage.

Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken said the community had shown their support for the project during recent community engagement.

“I want to thank everyone who took the time to have their say on the concept design for the Sports Hub,” she said.

“It’s encouraging to have received positive feedback from passionate community members who are looking forward to using the new facility, and I’m pleased to see the project progressing.”

The construction of the Sports Hub is the first phase of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre Precinct redevelopment project, with the existing recreation centre to be upgraded to a Community Hub in phase two.

“The Wanneroo Recreation Centre was built in 1971 and no longer meets the needs of our fast-growing community,” Mayor Aitken said.

“Providing opportunities for our residents to be active and healthy is a key focus for the City, and having access to this dedicated Sports Hub will make an enormous difference in the lives of our Central Ward residents.”

The City has received a $5 million funding commitment from the State Government to enable to delivery of the Wanneroo Recreation Centre redevelopment.

The City will explore funding options for the balance of the project.
