Council adopts sustainable 2024/25 Budget

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr John Forsyth, said the Budget continues Council's commitment to sustainable financial management and community engagement.  

"Our strong cost management practices have positioned us well to continue delivering essential services and projects, even as conditions change," he said. 

"This budget ensures we can meet our community's needs both now and in the future." 

Cr Forsyth said there are a range of important strategic planning projects in the budget which will put in place the framework for planning scheme amendments in coming years.  

"This includes ensuring that we have the necessary businesses, experiences, infrastructure, and planning controls in place to achieve that vision while conserving and enhancing our built and natural environments," he said.  

"We are working together in the face of continuing cost pressure on materials and services to prioritise completion of grant funded projects, the majority of which have a funding deadline of June 2025.  

"Delivery of these projects are important so that our community can enjoy modern, inclusive, safe and versatile facilities."  

The Budget includes a 2.75% rate increase and expects a surplus of just over $8.5 million. 

This surplus is mainly due to Council receiving funds in advance of capital works projects that have not yet been completed, making Council's total income appear higher.  

These funds are allocated to be spent by the end of the 2024/25 financial year.

Council has also reviewed and adjusted fees and charges to align with actual service provision costs and inflation. There are some new fees and charges that will be rolled out over the 2024/25 financial year.  

A thorough community consultation process was conducted, starting in November 2023, with further public consultation on the draft budget in May 2024.  

Cr Forsyth said all public submissions were carefully reviewed and considered by Council, ensuring the budget reflects the community's input and the Council's commitment to transparency and accountability. 

"This budget is a testament to our community’s engagement and our commitment to financial management," he said. 

"It sets a strong foundation for future growth and development in the Alpine Shire."
