Effective Wednesday 26 June 2024, Victoria Terrace and the surrounding roads will have a reduced speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour in place.
The introduction of a High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) comes after a request by Moree Plains Shire Council for Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to conduct a review in 2023 to assist with managing speed and pedestrian safety around the Moree District Hospital, River Gums and Whiddon (Residential Aged Care) in Moree.
“Council wanted to facilitate safer access for pedestrians throughout the area near the hospital and aged care facilities by reducing vehicle speeds and changing driver behaviour to have a positive road safety impact,” announced Mayor Mark Johnson.
New signage indicating the 40/km has been installed on Victoria Terrace from Edward Street to Alice Street and west of Alice Street from the roundabout to the end. It also incorporates sections of Auburn and Balo streets.
The area also includes the shared path along the Mehi River and Botanical Gardens, which is frequently used for special events and activities bringing an increase in foot traffic.
A Variable Message Sign (VSM) is in place on the major approaches to notify motorists of the changed road conditions.
