Each year, Plastic Free July encourages millions of people to take the challenge to reduce their plastic pollution.
Fremantle local Rebecca Prince-Ruiz founded the Plastic Free July campaign in 2011 after a visit to the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council’s (SMRC) Regional Resource Recovery Centre in Canning Vale left her shocked at how much plastic waste was being produced.
Are you ready to take up the challenge of going plastic free for a month?
We’ve pulled together some easy ways for you to reduce single-use plastics this July and beyond for a cleaner future.
Invest in a reusable coffee cup
Nothing beats a morning brew but make sure you do it sustainably with your very own reusable coffee cup. In Freo we’re spoilt for good coffee, but let’s all try to ditch the disposable cups and bring our own.
Celebrate sustainably
Say no to single-use plastics at your next party, such as straws, cutlery, plates and cups. Instead, opt for sustainable options that are compostable. And remember to avoid plastic food wrap. Steer away from balloons and confetti and get creative with your decorations. You could sew reusable bunting to add some colour to your next event (bonus points for making it out of old clothing!).
BYO containers and bags
Avoid pre-packed produce and opt for grocers that let you bring your own containers. There are some great bulk food stores around too!
Be conscious with your buying
Before you make your next purchase, stop and ask yourself: Do I really need this? Do I need this much of it? Is there a better alternative? Buy Nothing Facebook groups are a great alternative to buying new, which operate on an exchange of goods bartering system. Not only does it save items from landfill, but it’ll also save you money. Check out the local Facebook groups Buy Nothing Hilton, Buy Nothing Fremantle and Buy Nothing Beaconsfield to name a few! Happy bartering!
