On 8 July 2024 the Picton Botanic Gardens playspace and amenities were officially opened by Mayor Matt Gould and Local Member for Hume Angus Taylor MP. Deputy Mayor Matthew Deeth, Cr Suzy Brandstater, Cr Blair Briggs, Cr Hilton Gibbs, Cr Beverley Spearpoint, CEO Ben Taylor and Council staff were also in attendance.
It was a great day for fun and play with the community invited along to enjoy the playground facilities and a sausage sizzle.
This project is part of our huge investment into parks, sportsgrounds and community facilities right across the Shire from Warragamba to Yanderra.
The refurbished playspace includes a separate children’s and toddler’s play area with an adjoining walkway bridge. The playgrounds include water play and sensory elements along with traditional play equipment. The new amenities block is also completely accessible.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt, said the opening of the new playspace was an important addition to the Picton Botanic Gardens for locals and visitors alike.
“This $920,000 in support from both levels of government has enabled Picton to lead and deliver its’ own projects that stimulate the economy, boost industry and jobs, and support recovery after the Black Summer bushfires,” Minister Watt said.
“Not only does the new playspace add another reason to visit the gardens with the family, it also provides people with a place to meet, check in with one another and stay active which is critical for disaster recovery.”
Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW Tara Moriarty said the Picton Botanic Gardens playspace and amenities project is an example of the NSW Governments commitment to building stronger more resilient regional economies.
“This project is an example of the NSW Government supporting the long-term development of regional communities, ensuring they have the infrastructure and services needed to grow and thrive,” Ms Moriarty said.
“The NSW Government is backing community projects in the Wollondilly region that will boost preparedness for future disasters, encourage economic recovery, aid tourism and bring people together.”
Mayor Matt Gould said, “The playspace at the beautiful Picton Botanic Gardens is an all abilities space that encompasses universal design principles and supports 'Everyone Can Play'. At the heart of this is a declaration - that play really is for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or cultural background.”
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the NSW Government has contributed $1.9 million to the Picton Botanic Gardens upgrades.
“Picton’s new inclusive playground has a range of exciting additions for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy,” Mr Scully said.
“The NSW Government is providing this important open space upgrade for Picton to give local residents increased access to high quality, vibrant open spaces with lasting community benefits.”
“Thanks to all who attended the celebration, especially our special guests. I was delighted to see so many people come along to help us launch this fantastic facility,” he said.
This project is co-funded by the Australian and NSW Governments Bushfire Local Economy Recovery Fund and NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program along with a contribution from Council. It is the next phase of the Picton Parklands Master Plan.
