WHAT: Plant Giveaway & Volunteer Expo
WHEN: 3 August, 10am-2pm.
WHERE: Civic Centre
Council will be holding a Plant Giveaway & Volunteer Expo at the Civic Centre next month to mark Local Government Week.
The event will run from 10am-2pm on August 3 and feature pop-up stalls hosted by local volunteer groups in an effort to boost volunteer numbers in the city and remind locals of what community services are available in Broken Hill.
There will also be hundreds of plants to give away (limit 2 per-person) with a range of shrubs, small trees, and groundcovers available.
The Volunteer Expo and plant giveaway will be complemented by a kids Merry Go Round thanks to the Ys Men's Club, a big BBQ hosted by Rotary, and hot donuts cooked by our local Scouts.
Mayor Tom Kennedy said the event was a chance for Council to give back to the community, raise money for worthy causes, and also raise awareness about the importance of volunteering.
"We haven't had a plant giveaway in a few years so we were keen to bring it back to help people green their yards," he said.
"And I hope we see lots of volunteer groups hosting stalls and letting everyone know about the amazing work they do.
"A lot of people don't realise how much fun and impact you can have as a volunteer, and when people actually hear about the things they can do to benefit their community they're far more likely to get involved.
"I'd also like to thank Rotary, the Ys Men, and the Scouts for all getting on board and ensuring this will be a big event for local families.”
Volunteer-based groups are encouraged to nominate to host a stall by contacting Council’s Community Events Assistant on 0436 679 921 or at [email protected] by July 20.
