On Tuesday, 9 July the Kambalda Community Resource Centre and Kambalda Community Gardens joined the rest of Australia in celebrating National NAIDOC week in recognition of the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The 2024 NAIDOC theme – Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud – celebrates the unyielding spirit of First Nations people and the communities.
This year’s theme, resonated strongly with the Community Resource Centre and Community Gardens, inspiring one another to engage in meaningful activities that promote understanding and appreciation of Indigenous heritage.
The Kambalda Community Garden was set up for a morning of celebratory arts and crafts activities for everyone to remember for a long time to come.
Kambalda Community Gardens had generously allocated a garden bed specifically for the occasion, which Judumul Aboriginal Corporation were invited to create artwork on, in commemoration of the event.
The high light of the morning was the planting of bush tucker plants, with one of each of the seven community groups present (Kambalda Community Garden, Shire of Coolgardie Councillor, Shire of Coolgardie, MEEDAC, KWDHS P&C, Kambalda West Playgroup, Judumul Aboriginal Corporation) to plant.
Prevailing winds may have prevented the fire pit from being lit but this did not stop the damper from been cooked. What better way to close the morning with warm damper and hot tea/ chocolate shared amongst friends and family. Special mention of thank you to Sam Roma-Harris for making this work for us.
A special thank you to the Kambalda Community Garden for their endless efforts and time in preparing for this event and for being so amazing in assisting in making the event the success it was.
