Toowoomba Region Mayor Cr Geoff McDonald and Councillors are extending their best wishes to all Australian athletes and officials, especially those with links to Toowoomba, ahead of the imminent start of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the following Paralympics.

Mayor McDonald said Council was pleased to send a message of support to the green and gold team on behalf of Toowoomba Region residents.

“I am excited and proud to offer an encouraging message of support for the Australian athletes and officials who will achieve a lifetime dream when they compete or officiate at the biggest sporting event of the year in Paris later this month and afterwards at the Paralympics,” Mayor McDonald said.

“The Toowoomba Region has a long and proud history with athletes across numerous Olympic sports, including track and field, hockey, basketball, rowing, squash, rugby sevens and archery winning medals, including gold medals, in past Games.

“Backed by this rich tradition of sporting excellence, we should all be extremely confident that our athletes will perform at their best in the coming month.

“From the other side of the world, we will be cheering our representatives as they compete against the world’s elite athletes.

“It is an incredible achievement to gain Olympic selection in the first instance and wearing the green and gold is worthy of our highest praise.

“I also acknowledge the years of training and personal sacrifices that athletes and officials make to attain the physical and mental skills that are needed to challenge the best in their field. Family, friends and other supporters also make an invaluable contribution to their achievements. It is also a reward and honour for the sporting organisations and coaches who guided athletes in their junior years.

“It is a thrilling moment for our athletes, and we wish them the best for their respective events. They are proud ambassadors for Australia and our Region and will deliver many memorable moments for sports fans in the coming weeks.

“I’m sure the events that unfold in Paris will serve as an added inspiration for young athletes and officials who are eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.”

Council will light the Annex behind City Hall nightly as a goodwill gesture for our Olympic and Paralympic representatives.

The Victoria Street bridge will also light up during the Games.
