On Thursday, 18 July 2024, the Cambridge Library was filled with excitement and curiosity as Town of Cambridge Mayor, Gary Mack, hosted a special story time event in honour of International Moon Day, which is celebrated on 20 July. The event, held from 10.30 AM to 11.30 AM, saw a lively turnout with children aged 2-5 years old and their parents and carers, eagerly gathering to enjoy a morning of stories, songs, and crafts.
Mayor Mack captivated the young audience with engaging readings of moon-themed books. The children listened intently to the delightful tales of The Mouse Who Ate the Moon by Petr Horacek, Stanley and the Sock Monster Goes to the Moon by Jedda Robaard, and How to Be on the Moon by Viviane Schwarz. Each story transported the children on magical journeys to the moon, sparking their imaginations and fostering a love for reading.
Following the storytelling session, the children participated in a fun craft activity, making their own rocket ship and star decorations to take home. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and creativity as the young participants showcased their artistic skills.
Mayor Mack expressed his joy in being part of this special event, saying, “It's wonderful to see so many young faces enjoying the magic of stories. Events like these not only encourage a love for reading but also bring our community together.” He added, “International Moon Day is a fantastic opportunity to inspire young minds and celebrate the wonders of our universe.”
Parents and carers appreciated the opportunity to engage children in educational and entertaining activities. One parent remarked, “My child was thrilled to hear stories about the moon and participate in the crafts. It's a fantastic way to celebrate International Moon Day and introduce them to the wonders of space.”
The success of the Special Story Time with Mayor Mack highlights the Town of Cambridge's commitment to fostering community spirit and promoting literacy among young residents. The Cambridge Library continues to be a hub for learning and creativity, offering various programs and events for all ages.
