Toowoomba will be represented at another international event in the Northern Hemisphere in addition to the 2024 Paris Olympics in coming days when the Region’s Ambassador and Town Crier Kevin Howarth competes at the prestigious Armada Cup at three venues across southern England.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Cr Geoff McDonald and Councillors are sending their best wishes to Mr Howarth for a successful outing at the three-day competition starting on Friday (July 26) in England.
Mayor McDonald said Mr Howarth had a wealth of competition experience and was entering his first overseas competition as the reigning Australian champion Crier, following his outstanding efforts at the 2023 national Town Crier Championships at Maryborough in Queensland.
Mr Howarth also won the Loudest Cry at the championships with an ear-piercing Cry that was recorded at more than 96 decibels, a little below his regular 100 decibel-plus range, but loud enough to drown out a chainsaw.
Mr Howarth was second at the 2022 Australian championships hosted by Central Coast Council in New South Wales.
Mayor McDonald said everyone wished Mr Howarth a successful and enjoyable contest in Devon.
“Kevin is passionate about representing our Region and has performed with distinction at many competitions and now has the chance to perform at an international event,” Mayor McDonald said.
Mr Howarth said he was proud to represent the Toowoomba Region, Queensland and Australia at the three-day Armada Cup, with performances scheduled at Plymouth, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth across Devon.
“I am looking forward to competing against Town Criers from across England, Bermuda and Nova Scotia,” Mr Howarth said.
“I warmed up for the main Armada Cup competition in Devon by finishing runner-up at an event at Barnoldswick in Yorkshire.
“After the Armada Cup competition, I will compete at an event at Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, before returning to Australia.
“There is a great sense of occasion when performing at these events and we enjoy the chance to meet and discuss the finer points of Town Crying.”
Mr Howarth said he was thankful for the support of Council and good wishes from many people who have encouraged him over the years and supported his latest trip.
