Central Coast Council is joining North West Resource Recovery & Recycling (NWRRR), alongside Devonport, Kentish, Latrobe and Waratah Wynyard.
This means NWRRR is now managing the region’s FOGO service, with organic waste processed locally at a new facility in Latrobe instead of Launceston.
This change for Central Coast Council requires minor adjustments in how we sort our FOGO waste.
These items are longer accepted in your FOGO bins and instead go in your landfill bins:
Pet waste and kitty litter: This is a health and safety risk to staff working on the picking line but also after processing. There is proof in other states that some cat diseases survive the composting process and we don’t want that in the compost used on farms and in gardens. Tea bags and coffee bags/ filters: Some of these are made up of materials that don’t break down during the composting process, including staples and synthetic fabrics. Bin liners including compostable and biodegradable brands: Even if they claim to be compostable or biodegradable, these bags don’t break down properly as they contain ‘forever chemicals’ PFAS and PFOS – these are currently under federal investigation for potential bans to prevent environmental contamination in soil and waterways.Thank you to our Central Coast community for doing a great job adjusting to this change. This helps us divert more waste from landfill and will contribute to making our region more environmentally sustainable.
