The City of Hobart will host an official Olympic live site at Wellington Court.
This site, now in action, features a large display screen broadcasting the Nine Network’s coverage of the Paris Olympic Games, providing an exciting opportunity for city shoppers, families and workers to cheer on the Australian athletes and immerse themselves in the Olympic spirit.
Acting Hobart Lord Mayor Dr Zelinda Sherlock highlighted the community aspect of the initiative.
“The live site at Wellington Court will be a fantastic place for our community to gather, celebrate, and support our Australian athletes together,” Cr Dr Sherlock said.
“This is more than just a broadcast; it's a celebration of our national pride and communal spirit.”
Co-owner of Wellington Court business Two Folk Espresso David Zerna said, “Events in Wellington Court bring the community together while also bolstering local businesses in the CBD precinct.
“These initiatives, as seen during the soccer World Cup, have previously brought significant boosts to local surrounding businesses.
“We look forward to the Olympics doing the same."
City Economy Portfolio Chair Ald Louise Bloomfield said this would result in economic benefits for surrounding businesses.
“The Wellington Court live site is not only a source of entertainment and community engagement but also a significant boost for local businesses,” Ald Bloomfield said.
“By drawing more people into the CBD, we are supporting the shops and eateries around Wellington Court and the Elizabeth Street Mall.
“We hope this initiative will provide a much-needed economic stimulus for our local businesses.”
Endorsed by the Australian Olympic Committee, the Wellington Court live site promises to be a hub of excitement and activity throughout the Olympic Games.
Australian Olympic Committee CEO Matt Carroll said, “The AOC is excited to have an official Olympics LIVE site in Hobart and thank the City of Hobart for their support.
“This site will bring people across the city together united in support of the Australian Olympic Team in Paris.
“This is a great opportunity to use the power of sport to inspire our youth to be the best they can be, and open opportunity as we head to our home Games, Brisbane 2032.”
The City of Hobart invites everyone to join in the festivities and support our athletes while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the city.
