Welcome to Active August! Active August is an Act Belong Commit Campaign, which seeks to highlight all the ways we can get active and the positive impact this can have on our mental health. Being active means different things to everybody, whether you’re training to be a pro-athlete, walking with friends to grab a coffee, or gardening outside; regular activity is one of the most important things we can do for our health!
What are the benefits of Active August?Being active is proven to help keep us mentally healthy. Regular exercise or maintaining an active lifestyle can help us sleep better, feel less fatigued, and improve our sense of control and self-esteem. It can also lower our blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce our stress and increase our energy levels and lots more!
Being active can also have social and economic benefits, being an opportunity to make new friends, create stronger connections with our community, and help us be more productive at school or work. For more benefits on being Active click here or visit The City’s Health and Wellbeing page
How can you get started this month?Any physical activity is good for your mental and physical health. Start small or by doing something you enjoy. It doesn’t have to be a big exercise or involve too much expense; it can be as easy as going for a walk. Getting active with someone else can make it more fun. Do it outdoors in nature for even greater mental health benefits!
The amount of time you should spend being active daily depends on your age. It is also important to limit the time spent being sedentary. The Australian Physical Activity and Exercise Guidelines provide information on the amount and type of physical activity needed for good health based on age.
