Upgrade works to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists have been completed at the Margaret and West streets intersection in Newtown, Toowoomba.

Toowoomba Regional Council Construction and Maintenance (Infrastructure Services) portfolio spokesperson, Cr Carol Taylor, said the project included an upgrade to traffic signals and phasing, along with dedicated left-turning lanes.

“Upgrades to the intersection included a designated lane for through and right-turn movements on both Margaret Street approaches, with right-turn movements on West Street now limited to green arrows only,” Cr Taylor said.

“The introduction of green painted cycle lanes and new ‘Share the Road’ signage will also assist to improve awareness for motorists and cyclists.

“The project was funded under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which targets high-crash areas, reduces the risk of accidents and improves safety. In Queensland, the Black Spot Program is administered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) on behalf of the Australian Government.

“Council is committed to improving safety for all road users and we thank the Australian Government for providing project funding.

“Council appreciates the disruption that construction projects can have on residents, businesses and the wider community, and we thank everyone for their co-operation and patience during these vital safety upgrade works.”
