City considered Most Active Roadwise Council

The City of Albany has been recognised for its outstanding commitment to road safety and active community engagement, being awarded the Most Active Council at the WALGA Local Government Awards Gala.

This prestigious accolade highlights Albany's dedication to improving infrastructure, enhancing safety, and fostering community well-being within the municipality.

Several key projects contributed to this award which includes the construction of a roundabout at the dangerous intersection of North Road and Sanford Road which has significantly improved traffic flow.

The City has also made significant strides with its Black Spot Projects such as the intersection of Target Road, Galle Street, and Sydney Street which prevents vehicles from shortcutting the corner.

Safety has also been heightened at the intersection of York Street and Proudlove Parade which has been improved by installing a median island which enables vehicles to pause when crossing.

Sharing knowledge and experience, representatives from the City presented at the Road Safety Conference in Cranbrook, offering insights and strategies to improve road safety at a broader level.

The construction of shared paths on Marine Drive to the Albany Heritage Precinct is another noteworthy achievement which improves access for cyclists and benefits visitors.

Furthermore, the new pathways at Maley Place and Bardley Road fill a crucial gap in the Spencer Park pathway network, providing better connections to the nearby hospital and schools.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks stated that this award is an example of the incredible foresight of City staff and community.

“These awards underpin the importance the City and community place on road safety in our own backyard, and indicate the seriousness of having a safe road network in regional WA,” he said.

“Being recognised as a Most Active Council is a testament to our ongoing commitment to creating a safer and more connected community.

“We will continue to prioritise projects that enhance safety, improve infrastructure, and foster a sense of unity and well-being in our community.”
