Norfolk Street extension proposal

The City of Fremantle’s plan to improve the connection between the city centre and Fishing Boat Harbour is moving ahead.

The City is currently seeking to re-zone a section of land between Marine Terrace and Mews Road to allow for an extension of Norfolk Street.

The area includes the site of the Italian Club Fremantle and some of the car parking around it.

Norfolk Street could then be extended across the railway line and accompanied by a mix of community, commercial and residential uses along the southern side, facing the Esplanade Reserve.

The proposed redevelopment would make the area more pedestrian-friendly and create additional public open spaces by relocating the existing car parking.

The City must first ask the WA Planning Commission (WAPC) to amend the zoning from ‘Parks and Recreation reserve’ to ‘Central City’.

Ahead of making a formal request, the City would like to get feedback from the community.

It is also an opportunity for the community to find out more about the City’s exciting vision for this part of the city.

The Norfolk Street extension was reflected in the state government’s final Fremantle Harbours Master Plan, released in September last year, to revitalise the harbour precinct.

The City is working with the Italian Club to ensure the community institution is included in future plans.
