Naroghid Landfill Transfer Station does not accept commercial tyre volumes

The Corangamite Regional Landfill Transfer Station does not accept commercial volumes of tyres.

Corangamite Shire Council Manager Environment and Emergency Lyall Bond said receival of tyres for recycling at Naroghid Landfill is for domestic volumes only.

“Business that need to recycle tyres either in large volumes, or have larger earthmoving and industrial tyres, should contact tyre recyclers and receive a quoted collection cost.” Mr Bond said.

“There has previously been some flexibility with receivals on site, however, due to the highly variable costs for recycling and the EPA introducing stockpile restrictions, Council is reinforcing the requirements for domestic tyres and volumes of tyres only.

“Following a number of tyre fires in Australia and around the world, the EPA has declared tyres to be hazardous waste. Tyre fires are very difficult to control and produce hazardous smoke, which can cause health risks.

“Council’s advice is that it would be more beneficial for customers to contact a tyre recycling facility directly, rather than Council charging increased fees to allow for the current disposal cost variability.”

Council can continue to accept up to four tyres from Shire householders.

Customers can find their nearest accredited recycler at tyrestewardship.org.au

Under the National Waste Policy Action Plan, Australia banned the export of waste tyres in the second half of 2020.

This means tyres must be recycled locally or reused for things such as road construction.

Waste tyres can be reused in other applications including as safety barriers at racing venues and similar activities.

Farmers can use waste tyres to weigh down covers on silage stacks but need to register with the EPA if they have more than five cubic metres.

It is an offence under the Environment Protection Act 2017 and local laws to burn or dump waste tyres. Residents can report illegal dumping or disposal of tyres to the EPA on 1300 372 842 or at epa.vic.gov.au/report-pollution
