Floreat Beach Dune Restored by Cambridge Coastcare Volunteers

Published on 13 August 2024

Cambridge Coastcare has successfully completed the rehabilitation of a dune at Floreat Beach, tackling the challenges of significant erosion and uncontrolled public access. The project was initiated in response to concerns about the steep dunes adjacent to the Floreat main beach car park, which had been deteriorating over time, exposing rubble from the old Floreat Surf Life Saving Club, destroyed during Cyclone Alby in 1978.

The Town of Cambridge undertook sand replenishment work from 17 to 22 May 2024, providing a solid foundation for the rehabilitation efforts. Following this, Cambridge Coastcare volunteers led the installation of matting from 23 May to 6 June 2024 to stabilise the resloped dunes and control public access. The temporary fencing was then installed to further protect the area.

The final stage of the project involved extensive planting efforts, with volunteers guided by experienced Cambridge Coastcare members. The planting began on 28 May 2024 and continued through to 14 July 2024, successfully restoring the natural vegetation and ensuring the long-term stability of the dunes for future generations.
