The Shire of Boddington is excited to announce that the Council has officially adopted Local Planning Policy 21, Tiny Houses on Wheels. This progressive policy acknowledges the growing interest in alternative and compact housing solutions and provides a comprehensive framework for the establishment and regulation of tiny houses within Boddington.

Recognising the need for more sustainable and affordable living options, the Shire of Boddington is now among fewer than five Shires nationwide to adopt this planning policy. The Policy outlines the necessary criteria for permitting tiny houses, ensuring they meet specific standards and regulations to promote safe and liveable conditions.

Key elements of the policy include:

Identification of Permissible Circumstances: The policy outlines situations where tiny houses or tiny house communities are permitted within the Shire. Simplified Assessment Framework: A streamlined process for assessing tiny houses on wheels, making it easier for residents to understand and comply with regulations. Standard Requirements: Establishes clear guidelines for tiny houses on wheels to ensure compliance with related regulations. Building Standards: In the absence of a specific classification for tiny houses in the National Construction Code, the policy refers to Vehicle Standards Bulletin 1 for required building standards. Universal Application: The policy applies to all zoned and reserved land under Local Planning Scheme No.3.

By implementing this policy, the Shire of Boddington aims to support diverse housing options and foster a more inclusive community. Tiny houses on wheels, defined as dwellings of no more than 50m² built on a wheeled trailer base with domestic-grade materials, offer an affordable and sustainable living solution. These homes are designed to be stationary and resemble conventional dwellings, providing a permanent residence for their occupants.
