Biodiversity Month is held every September and aims to promote the importance of protecting, conserving, and improving biodiversity both within Australia and across the world.
Cardinia Shire Council is partnering with other Melbourne councils to see who can record the most species in iNaturalist during Biodiversity month. By participating you’ll learn about local plants and animals, be contributing to citizen science, creating real data that scientists and researchers can access and you'll also show the world the amazing flora and fauna found right across Cardinia.
Last year, in Cardinia 150 dedicated observers took pictures of over 2,186 plants and animals, identifying 682 unique species. This data helps scientists to identify any new wildlife as well as create baseline ecosystem data assisting with monitoring future biodiversity health.
The BioBlitz encourages residents to record local species throughout September using iNaturalist – a free app that helps you identify the plants and animals around you. So grab your camera and get out into nature.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jack Kowarzik is excited about the BioBlitz challenge and the value it brings.
“Participating in the Biodiversity Blitz is a fantastic way to connect with nature and contribute to important scientific research. Every observation helps scientists understand and protect our local environment,” Mayor Kowarzik said.
“Across Cardinia there are so many incredible places to see such a diverse range of animals and plants that you’ll be spoilt for choice for where to head.” he added.
To become a Bioblitz observer, simply download the free iNaturalist App and sign up to the Biodiversity Blitz 2024 - Cardinia Shire project. Then throughout September record your observations. Don’t worry if you can’t identify the plant or animal, the app can help you identify your observation, alongside a helpful friendly community.
Take care when moving around taking images; use designated paths so you don't step on plants or snakes and never disturb nesting birds. If you see young birds on the ground, they are likely to be fledglings so please leave them. If you see an animal in need of help, contact wildlifevictoria.org.au
To help prepare you for the BioBlitz, join the free iNaturalist Community Champions Webinar on Tuesday 27 August from 7pm to 8pm. Community members from different council areas will share their stories of being a citizen scientist. You'll learn how and why they use iNaturalist and typical or unusual observations they've made.
