Two new documents will guide Gannawarra Shire Council’s commitment to reduce the barriers women, girls and people of all cultures and socio-economic demographics experience in accessing community sports.
Council adopted its Fair Access policy and action plan at its August 2024 Meeting, with both documents developed following an extensive community engagement process.
Developed in response to the Victorian Government’s Fair Access Policy Roadmap, the two documents aim to increase equitable access and participation in sport and active recreation throughout the Gannawarra.
“Sport and active recreation options in the Gannawarra provide great health and social benefits to residents, however for various reasons, it can be difficult for people to take part in these activities,” Mayor Ross Stanton said.
“The Fair Access policy and action plan will address many of these challenges, which will help our local clubs to attract new players, volunteers and officials, as well as ensure these groups remain eligible for future funding opportunities.”
As part of the community engagement process, residents were encouraged to complete the Fair Access Community Survey, which has helped Council understand how residents currently participate in sport and active recreation locally and what barriers prevent people from participating.
The survey found that costs associated with participating in sport and active recreation, competing interests and flexibility of options was a barrier to participation, with socialisation, improving health and developing new skills benefits to keeping active.
“Council thanks all residents for providing feedback via the community engagement period and looks forward to implementing the tasks listed in the action plan, which will increase participation opportunities for all residents,” Mayor Stanton said.
