PWS to survey wild fallow deer

The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) is intending to conduct an aerial survey for wild fallow deer over landholdings between Cormiston Creek, Riverside and Acropolis Drive, Legana between September 9 and 13.

The survey will include low flying over this area and near the West Tamar Highway.

 This survey will be conducted using a helicopter and thermal imagery. 

The intent of the aerial survey is to obtain a population estimate of wild fallow deer in this region, to allow future deer management strategies to be scaled accordingly. 

The survey will commence at dawn and take approximately one hour to complete.

The PWS apologises for any disturbance, however the use of thermal detection equipment requires the survey to be undertaken at this time.

The PWS recognises that the West Tamar area holds a number of wild fallow deer that are causing problems for landowners, as well as posing a significant public safety risk along the West Tamar Highway. 

In recognition of this, the West Tamar has been identified as a priority area for wild fallow deer population management and this survey is an important first step in managing the issue.
