A diverse collection of culturally significant events will share in more than $120,000 awarded through the Community Partnerships Grant today.
Cairns Regional Council signed off the funding to mark Multicultural Month, supporting an array of cultural events that highlight the rich diversity of our community.
Among the recipients is the Cairns Chinese New Year Festival, marking the Year of the Snake from January 29 to February 16 next year.
This event is a major highlight of our multicultural calendar, attracting over 3,500 people to enjoy traditional performances, fireworks and the Lantern Festival.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said attracting multicultural events helped celebrate the region’s unique diversity.
“Cairns has a beautiful blend of cultures, with each group adding something unique to our community,” Cr Eden said.
“I recently attended amazing events like the Japanese Bon Dance and Cairns Indian Festival that bring so much joy to the city.
“During Multicultural Month, it’s a great reminder that no matter where we come from or what we believe, we all come together as one community.”
More than 37,200 people, just over 22% of the community, were born overseas, bringing valuable new traditions and perspectives to Cairns.
Multicultural Month is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the positive impact different cultures have on our community.
Council has also provided funding for the Karibu Gala, an event to welcome new Kenyan students to Cairns, which will be held on 26 October 2024.
Further support was awarded to the Cairns Durga Puja, celebrating the triumph of good over evil, the Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) and Taiwanese Festival.
Other events, such as Christmas in Babinda, Cairns Pride Festival and Rotary Beach Vibe are also receiving support.
