Community update: wild weather closes Salamanca Market

Published on 30 August 2024

Due to the wild weather fronts expected tomorrow, the City of Hobart has made the difficult decision to cancel the Salamanca Market.

In consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology, it has been determined predicted wind gusts pose a safety risk to our stallholders, crew, and visitors.

The Salamanca Market will return next Saturday (weather permitting).

The severe weather forecast has also resulted in the City of Hobart closing St David’s Park, Princes Park and Waterworks Reserves until Monday, 2 September.

Quotes to be attributed to City of Hobart CEO Michael Stretton:

“It is highly unusual for the Market to be closed due to weather conditions; with the only time it has occurred previously in its 52-year history being in April 2013.

“We apologise to anyone who may have travelled specifically to visit Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction, but safety is our top priority.”
