Stage one of Mayfair rehabilitation program complete

Posted on September 3, 2024

The benefits of a major project to rehabilitate roads and stormwater infrastructure in the Mayfair Estate in Emerald are already being felt after recent wet weather.

A lack of appropriate stormwater outlets in the estate’s original design resulted in the roadways becoming deformed over time due to pooling water.

‘The road quality in the estate has rapidly deteriorated over the last 20 years because of the inadequate stormwater drainage,’ General Manager Infrastructure and Utilities Jason Hoolihan said.

‘Anyone who has driven along those roads after heavy rain would know just how bad it was, with water unable to get away. But thanks to the works that have been done over the last 18 months we are already seeing a huge improvement.’

Stage one of the multi-phased project is now finished, with new road surfacing and retrofitted stormwater mains completed on Mitchell Street, Baird Street and Mayfair Drive from Desgrand Street to Mitchell Street. An additional drainage outlet was constructed at Baird Street as well, allowing for improved stormwater immunity.

‘As we’ve seen with recent rain, the stormwater capability is already able to handle rainfall better now that the pits and pipes are adequately sized and positioned for the flow of water in the area,’ Mr Hoolihan said.

‘The smoother, tougher road pavement will also accommodate growing traffic usage and extend the life of these roads.’

The project will now move into stage 2, which will include works on Desgrand Street, a section of Newman Drive and a further section of Mayfair Drive.

Mr Hoolihan thanked estate residents for their continued cooperation and patience.

‘We know this project has brought with it unavoidable disruptions for residents, impacting your day-to-day lives for months,’ he said.

‘We are so grateful for the community’s support and understanding as these vital upgrades are carried out.’
