Council notes findings of Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report
Alpine Shire 6 Sep 2024

The report was developed as a result of the Alpine Shire Community Climate Action Plan Roadmap 2023, which recommended that Council develop a greenhouse gas emissions inventory to provide greater insight into key emissions reductions opportunity areas across the Alpine Shire.

The report provides a detailed and locally accurate profile of emissions across the Alpine Shire for the 2021/22 baseline year, which will impact how Council prioritises and supports impactful community climate action.

Council noted the findings at the August Ordinary Council Meeting, which identified road transport as the highest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the Alpine Shire at 34%, followed by agriculture at 33%, commercial electricity at 12.6% and residential electricity at 10.5%.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr John Forsyth, said that the report, in conjunction with the roadmap, gives both Council and community a valuable resource to develop commercial and residential goals that target climate mitigation and adaptation.

"Now that we are aware of where our greenhouse gas emissions are coming from, we can make informed decisions about where to prioritise attention and resources," he said.

"The report and the roadmap provide the necessary information for Council to work together with community to develop impactful strategies that mitigate and adapt to climate change."

One initiative that will support emissions reductions for commercial and residential electricity is the Community Energy and EV Infrastructure Prospectus, which Council adopted at the August Ordinary Council Meeting.
