The Broken Hill City Art Gallery, in collaboration with Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Health Corporation, is excited to announce that submissions are now open for the 2024 Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards. The annual Awards event is supported by Broken Hill City Council and Maari Ma, and provides an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists residing in the Maari Ma region to display and celebrate creativity and cultural heritage.
With a total prize pool of $12,500, the Awards celebrate artistic excellence across various categories:
Open Art Prize: $5,000 for artwork in any medium on any theme. Emerging Artist Award: $2,000. Nhuungku Prize for Excellence: $2,000, automatically eligible for artists who identify as female. Young Artist Prizes: $1,000 in art supplies for artists aged 16-21 years. $500 in art supplies for artists aged 15 years and under. (Artists under 18 will automatically be eligible for the Young Artist Prize.) People's Choice Award: $2,000.Reflecting on last year’s event, Kathy Graham, Gallery and Museum Manager at Broken Hill City Art Gallery, shared, “The 2023 Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards were a tremendous success, bringing together a diverse range of artists and their powerful stories. The community's response was overwhelmingly positive, and we are eager to see the new wave of talent that will emerge in 2024. These Awards not only celebrate artistic excellence but also strengthen our cultural connections.”
