Council is pleased to announce that the new weighbridge at Southbridge Waste Transfer Station (WTS) is now open to the public.

ā€œIā€™d like to extend my thanks to the many local businesses and staff who have been involved in this project, including Duggans, Reardon Ford Electrical, Tasbulk and Bennett Scales. Thank you for your contribution to the successful completion of this project,ā€ said Mayor Doyle.

In attendance to officially open the weighbridge on Monday 9 September 2024 were Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle, Duggans General Manager Brent Hardy, Duggans Operations and Sales Manager Rodney Duggan and Council Assistant Manager Waste Management Bruce Paterson.

Mayor Doyle also congratulated staff at Southbridge for their commitment to the project and the hard work in getting up to speed with the new operations.

The weighbridge will allow customers to pay by weight instead of volume at Southbridge WTS. This method is more accurate and aligns with how Council is charged for waste, helping to avoid errors in volume estimates.

The weighbridge and new point of sale (POS) systems will provide precise data on waste received and sent to landfill from both kerbside collections and other transfer stations. It will also track items sold at reuse shops, showing how much is diverted from landfill, which is crucial for improving waste diversion rates.

Tonnage fees are based on standard waste densities, and as a result the aim is to have similar pricing on average to our volumetric rates.

The weighbridge process requires two trips over the scales in the same direction, with a license plate recognition camera speeding up the process.

Traffic flow through the site has changed, so please follow new signs and road markings. Please be patient with staff as they adapt to the new system.

Due to licensing requirements, the weighbridge is not yet able to offer a formal public weighing option. However, Council aims to provide this service to the Huon Valley community in the near future.

Council will continue charging by volume at both Cygnet and Dover Waste Transfer Stations.
