2040 Climate Ready Hobart Strategy

The Hobart City Council has become the first Tasmanian council to set the ambitious target of zero emissions by 2040.

The City of Hobart’s 2040 Climate Ready Hobart Strategy sets out the target for the Hobart community to achieve at least a 70% reduction in emissions across Hobart by 2030 (from a 2020 baseline) and zero emissions ten years later.

Waste currently accounts for nearly 10% of Hobart emissions.

Last year, FOGO helped prevent 269 tonnes of emissions, equal to taking 122 cars off the road for a year, but there is always more we can do.

Sea level rise, flooding, and fire are major threats to Hobart, with bushfire emergencies likely to become more common and 11,718m2 of buildings at risk of coastal flooding by 2050 if we don’t act as a city now.

Climate Ready Hobart is an evidence based but comprehensive guide for the City and community to work together in addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency as we move towards 2040.

The strategy outlines clear actionable goals for the community and the city to lead by example, with shared responsibility at its core.

It prioritises community, nature and economic outcomes ensuring decisions are guided by climate science.

The strategy will be supported by five-year action plans, reviewed annually through the City’s planning and budgeting pro

Taste of Summer sponsorship and Business Events Tasmania Annual Funding Submission 2024-25

The popular City of Hobart free Community Day at the Taste of Summer will continue this year after the Hobart City Council endorsed a one-year event sponsorship.

This includes a $65,000 cash sponsorship for the City of Hobart Community Day on 31 December 2024, along with in-kind support valued up to $390,000 for equipment, venue hire, and other logistical needs.

Last year’s City of Hobart free Community Day attracted 5726 patrons with the event organisers receiving positive feedback from those attending.

Overall, the Taste of Summer attracted more than 85,000 patrons, with 30.25 per cent of attendees coming from interstate.

The Council will also inform organisers, the Pinpoint Group, that it plans to review its funding from the Community Day 2024/25.

The Council also noted the successful performance of Business Events Tasmania in the 2023-24 grant agreement and has approved $80,000 in funding for the 2024-25 financial year, with the CEO authorised to finalise the grant agreement.

The Council will also inform Business Events Tasmania that it plans to review its funding from 2024/25.
