LOCAL GOVERNMENT CODE OF CONDUCT

From 10 September 2024, the Local Government Amendment (Code of Conduct) Act 2023 takes effect across Tasmania.

The Amendment Act aims to deliver a number of targeted improvements to the Local Government Code of Conduct framework, including:

Providing a single statewide Code that will apply automatically to all councillors. Requiring councils to adopt a dispute resolution policy within 12 months of its commencement. Introducing a ‘public interest’ test for investigating complaints. Having a more rigorous initial assessment process undertaken by a Panel member who is a lawyer. Have the Code of Conduct Panel Executive Officer undertake monitoring of compliance with sanctions.

The new Local Government (Code of Conduct) Order 2024 replaces the Central Coast Council’s existing Code of Conduct of Councillors without the need for formal adoption by Council.

In accordance with the new framework, the Council will develop and adopt a dispute resolution policy over the coming months, in conjunction with the Local Government Association on Tasmania.
