Over 1,200 Councillors, Mayors & General Managers from across 537 local governments in Australia gathered in Canberra for the 30th National General Assembly in July.
Mayor Doyle was in attendance with Deputy Mayor Thorpe and Councillors Gibson and Jessop.
“This year over two days, delegates heard and voted on 160 motions outlining opportunities for the Federal Government to better support councils and communities. These motions included solutions to address the financial sustainability of councils, support councils to deliver cost-of-living relief, maintain safe local roads and footpaths, and be better prepared for and recover from natural disasters,” reported Mayor Doyle.
“It was an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the foundational role trust plays in our democratic institutions. By participating, Councillors gained valuable insights from leading experts on how to foster and sustain trust within our region, enabling us to serve more effectively and uphold the integrity of our roles,” said Deputy Mayor Thorpe.
“I came back feeling empowered to help lead Council and proud of where we are up to and where we are heading,” said Councillor Gibson.
A report has been compiled by Councillors in attendance reflecting their first-hand accounts and opinions. This report can be found on Council’s website, within the attachments of the September Ordinary Meeting of Council – (https://www.huonvalley.tas.gov.au/council/meetings-agendas-minutes/).
