Weed warning – Darwin’s Barberry

Darwin’s Barberry (Berberis darwinii) is a rare weed in the Huon Valley.

This evergreen shrub can grow dense thickets and is classified as a high priority declared weed under the Biosecurity Act 2019. It can escape from gardens and quickly spread through native forests, plantations, and agricultural areas. New infestations must be eradicated quickly.

Have you seen it?

Spiny, evergreen shrub growing to 4m tall, tough, woody and densely hairy stems. Attractive, deep yellow-orange flowers in drooping clusters, and dark purple berries with a bluish-white bloom. Flowers in spring and fruit occurs in summer.
