An important section of Mulchays Road in Arcadia Valley is now sealed, improving operational efficiency for energy company Santos and providing more reliable access for the community.
Discussions between Central Highlands Regional Council and Santos had revealed that an unsealed 10-kilometre section of Mulcahys Road posed a considerable barrier to Santos’ operations. Recognising the issue’s urgency, council initiated a coordinated effort to address the road conditions. This project received crucial funding from multiple sources, including Santos, the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program, the state government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS), and council.
Council’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Ross Musgrove acknowledged the hard work of everyone involved in getting this vital infrastructure project completed.
‘The project faced numerous obstacles, including severe flooding that disrupted progress, prolonged droughts resulting in water shortages for construction, and a scarcity of suitable gravel materials in the region. Heavy construction traffic further complicated the project’s timeline,’ he said.
‘Despite these hurdles, the determination and collaborative efforts of all stakeholders have led to the project’s success. The newly sealed road not only enhances Santos’ operational capabilities but also brings lasting benefits to the broader community by improving the overall quality and accessibility of the road network.
‘Council remains committed to fostering partnerships that enhance regional infrastructure and support community development.’
