New Bike Racks for the City Centre

The City of Fremantle is asking the community to help it decide where to install some recently purchased bike racks in the city centre.

The City is asking the public to identify key areas where the new inverted U-shaped bike racks could be installed through a survey on the MySay website.

Improved access to bike racks would not only benefit existing cyclists, but also encourage more cyclists in the city, with the potential to: 

Reduce informal bike locking and declutter city streets Avoid an ad-hoc approach to where future bike racks are installed Increase security, safety and convenience for bike users Reduce bicycle vandalism Improve footfall and movement within the centre of Fremantle Encourage bicycle use, support inner-city businesses and facilitate community connection.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge encouraged people to share their ideas.

“We’d like the community to contribute their feedback on the existing bike rack facilities within the City as well as providing their thoughts on key locations in Fremantle's city centre that would benefit from new or additional bike parking infrastructure.”

The focus of this project is narrow and not intended to make changes to other types of cycling infrastructure or City policy.

The City will soon be conducting an internal review of the current Bike Plan, due to expire at the end of 2024, and will engage the community to provide contribution towards a replacement plan later.

The community can influence this project by: 

Sharing their thoughts on existing and future bicycle infrastructure in Fremantle by completing the City Bike Rack Survey. Plotting key areas for new bicycle parking, as well as current issues with bike infrastructure in the city centre through an Interactive Map. 

The City has partnered with Department of Transport, WestCycle and the RAC to host a cycle fair in Walyalup Koort as part of WA Bike Month events.

The event will be a fun and educational experience designed for bike riders of all abilities. Participants will learn how to navigate the streets safely and hear from experts on bike maintenance and products.

The City's Community Engagement Team will also be collecting feedback for this project at the event.
