Far North residents recognised for outstanding service

An internationally recognised biostatistician, a local surf lifesaving stalwart, and a tireless volunteer dedicated to supporting veterans were among Far North Queenslanders recognised this year’s Order of Australia honours.

The Order of Australia was established in 1975 and is Australia's highest system of honours, recognising significant contributions across various fields, including community service, youth development, public health, and sports.

It includes four categories – Companion (AC), Officer (AO), Member (AM), and Medal (OAM).

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said it was important to recognise people who contribute to their community.

“Though the stories and backgrounds of this year’s recipients vary, each one shares a common dedication to serving their community and leaving a lasting impact,” Cr Eden said.

“Recognising those in our community who do great things in the service of others and for their community is so important.

“I encourage everyone to make the effort to nominate someone you believe is worthy of an Order of Australia honour.

“To all of this year’s recipients, thank you again for your service and commitment to our community.”

Among this year’s Far Northern recipients were Distinguished Professor Louise Ryan AO, who was recognised for her ground-breaking biostatistical research and contribution to environmental science, and David Chalk OAM for his tireless efforts supporting veterans and their families.

Other notable recipients included Colin Sparkes OAM, a dedicated figure in surf lifesaving and rugby league, and Effie Bacalakis OAM for her extensive service to the Cairns community.

Medals of the Order of Australia were presented to the following Far North Queensland residents in 2024.
