The Town of Cambridge is pleased to announce the start of major upgrades at Floreat Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) following a ceremony on 14 October attended by local dignitaries and project supporters.
The $2.54 million redevelopment will make the Club more accessible and modernise its facilities, ensuring it continues to serve the community’s growing needs.
Town of Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack praised the Club for embodying the values of teamwork and safety, contributing to City Beach’s reputation as one of Western Australia’s beloved destinations.
“For over 75 years, Floreat SLSC has played a vital role in keeping beachgoers safe while fostering community spirit through sport and recreation,” Mayor Mack said.
“Sport and recreation are essential to health and wellness, benefitting our community and promoting active lifestyles. Floreat SLSC plays a key role in this, and this project will enable the Club to continue its vital offerings for many years to come.”
The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has provided up to $655,000 for accessibility improvements. This funding will support key upgrades such as a lift to access the first floor, universal access toilets with showers, and other enhancements to ensure the Club is inclusive and encourages participation in sporting and recreation by all members of the community.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Hon David Templeman MLA, represented at the ceremony by Member for Churchlands Christine Tonkin MLA, praised the project’s potential to strengthen community engagement.
“When we invest in sport and recreation, we invest in building stronger, healthier, and happier, and safer communities,” Minister Templeman said.

Lotterywest has contributed $655,000 to improve the Club's rescue service capabilities and increase community connection and participation. Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith said this funding would help modernise the facility, making it better equipped to support both lifesaving operations and community participation.
“Our support of projects like this reflects our commitment to fostering inclusive and thriving communities. Floreat SLSC plays a critical role in the safety and wellbeing of our beachgoers, and we are proud to help make these improvements a reality,” Mr Smith said.
The Town’s project includes modernised furnishings and facilities for lifesavers, and expanded spaces for community events and educational programmes.
Cathy McIntyre, President of Floreat SLSC, expressed her gratitude for the funding.
“This generous support from the Town of Cambridge, the State Government, and Lotterywest allows us to improve our lifesaving capabilities while making our multi-use facilities more inclusive and accessible for everyone.”
Construction is set to begin in late October, with the works expected to be completed in 2025.
