PSHB trees to be removed next week

The schedule of works is as follows:

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said as sad as it will be to lose the trees, she was pleased with the swift response following Fremantle Council’s decision on 25 September 2024 to fast-track the works.

“The removal of these affected trees is a necessary step to prevent the spread of PSHB and protect the health of our natural surroundings,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.

The 16 trees tested positive for PSHB in March to May this year.

Next week’s tree management program will be carried out by certified arborists who will be supervised by DPIRD, the agency leading the eradication response to the PSHB outbreak.

Supervision by DPIRD will ensure compliance with the Quarantine Area and Pest Control Notice.

The arborist will also undertake an inspection of adjacent trees at the time of the removal of the affected trees.

The City will prepare the three sites and plant non-PSHB host trees in the 2025 winter planting season, acting on DPIRD’s advice to wait at least six months.

City officers are engaging with experts to identify research opportunities for the management of PSHB.
