An exhibition featuring oil paintings by some of Australia’s leading late nineteenth and early twentieth Century artists will be displayed at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery until February 9, 2025.
The exhibition, Brushes of Sunlight: Oils from the Lindsay Collection, draws on artworks which are part of the Gallery’s nationally significant Lionel Lindsay Gallery and Library Collection.
The Gallery walls are aglow with works from the collection, which was established by noted art devotees William and Marion Bolton in Toowoomba in the 1950s.
The collection was officially opened by Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies in 1959 and has been housed at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery since 1994.
Guided by the collection’s namesake, Sir Lionel Lindsay, and his brother, Sir Daryl Lindsay, the Boltons acquired works by ‘Masters of Australian painting’ (Bill Bolton letter to Sir Lionel, 1 July 1957).
The Lindsays were eminent artists and Sir Daryl was Director of the National Gallery of Victoria 1941-1956.
The exhibition showcases most of the oils held in the Lindsay Collection.
Featured artists include some of Australia’s most notable exponents in this genre, including Will Ashton, Rupert Bunny, Herb Carstens, Mary Edwards, Emanuel Phillips Fox, Melville Haysom, Ivor Hele, George Washington Lambert, Daryl Lindsay, Percy Lindsay, John Longstaff, Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton.
The exhibition’s Twilight Tour will start at 5.30pm on Thursday, November 21. Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 19 directly to the Gallery on (07) 4688 6652 or [email protected]
