Do you know someone in Cairns who is always going above and beyond?

Now is your chance to shine a spotlight on them.

Cairns Regional Council is calling on residents to nominate local heroes for the 2025 Australia Day Awards.

The award categories are Citizen of the Year (21 years and over), Young Citizen of the Year (20 years and under), and Volunteer of the Year.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the awards are an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding contributions of people who have made a significant impact on the Cairns community.

“There are many remarkable residents of our city who selflessly work to better the lives of people in our community and make our city a better place to live,” Cr Eden said.

“For example, we have 2024 Citizen of the Year, Jacqui Backhouse, who has been quietly working to help young people for more than three decades.

“She is one of so many unknown heroes in our community who are dedicated to helping others, or who volunteer for local organisations or community groups.

“They contribute so much to the fabric of our community and are inspire those around them, often without even realising it – these awards ensure that their efforts and dedication do not go unnoticed.”

Nominations close at 4pm on Sunday 15 December.

Winners will be announced at a celebration on Australia Day.
