Upper Hunter Shire Council held its first ordinary meeting of the new Council, marking the start of a term focused on building a resilient, connected community. The meeting celebrated significant achievements and approved several important projects set to benefit the region. Key outcomes include:
Honouring 30 Years of Service – Simon Walmsley
Council proudly recognised Simon Walmsley for his 30 years of dedicated service. Simon, a third-generation member of the Walmsley family serving the Merriwa community, started his career as a Water & Sewer Operator in 1994 with the former Merriwa Shire Council. Now Water & Sewer Supervisor, Simon oversees crucial infrastructure for Merriwa, contributing significantly to our local community.
Celebrating Young Leaders – Mayor for a Day Competition Winners
Council welcomed winners of the Mayor for a Day competition, an initiative for Local Government Week that encourages young people to share ideas for enhancing their communities. This year’s young Deputy Mayor delivered a heartfelt speech to Councillors on supporting animals at the local shelter, highlighting the compassion and dedication of our Shire’s future leaders.
Council Meeting Schedule and Committee Appointments
Council confirmed its upcoming meeting schedule and appointed Councillors to various positions within the Corporate Services, Environmental & Community Services, and Infrastructure Services Standing Committees, ensuring continued focus on the community’s priorities.
Approval of Key Development Projects
Council endorsed several development projects aimed at enhancing facilities across the Shire:
Scone Airport Expansion: Approved construction of new hangars, a workshop, and taxiways, expanding functionality while preserving historical features with the relocation of a vintage Bellman Hangar. White Park Arena Extension: Approved an extension to White Park Arena to add covered cattle yard space and a water tank, reinforcing White Park as a leading equine and event venue. Campbell’s Corner Library Project: Council approved the next progression of the Campbell’s Corner Library project. The major development will involve staged renovations, including internal alterations and fit-out to create modern library facilities and public spaces. Youth and Community Centre in Murrurundi: Approved the construction of a new youth and community centre, including a covered basketball court and carpark, revitalising Wilson Memorial Park to serve as an inviting space for young people and families.State of the Shire Report 2021–2024
Council endorsed the State of the Shire Report, detailing Council’s progress from 2021 to 2024. This report covers achievements across infrastructure, economic growth, community health, and environmental sustainability, providing a foundation for the new Council as it builds on these efforts to meet community goals.
Scone Park Grandstand Upgrade Proposal
Council endorsed the Scone Park Grandstand Upgrade proposal, a community-driven project led by the Scone Rugby League Club. The plan includes a new grandstand, function room, canteen, and updated change rooms. Community feedback has shaped the design to include stormwater management, accessibility, and improved parking. With landowner’s consent granted, the Rugby League Club can now pursue development approvals and apply for funding.
Closed Council Items
Council acknowledges community interest in the items discussed in its closed session, regarding Hunter Warbirds and Gumman Place Hostel. While details remain confidential at this stage, closed Council sessions are only used when necessary, particularly for sensitive matters involving commercial, legal, or privacy concerns. Council is committed to transparency and will release further information once appropriate steps are completed.
