The Town of Cambridge celebrated 30 vibrant years of connecting communities from inner-city to the coast with a special civic function at the picturesque Quarry Amphitheatre on 23 October 2024.
The soirée brought together former and current Elected Members, Administration staff, and key stakeholders to reflect on the Town’s journey since its establishment on 1 July 1994.
Dignitaries in attendance included Member for Churchlands Christine Tonkin MLA (representing the Premier Hon Roger Cook MLA; Deputy Premier Hon Rita Saffioti MLA and Minister for Local Government Hannah Beazley MLA), Independent Member for Curtin Kate Chaney, and local government representatives.
The function provided an opportunity to appreciate those who have contributed to the Town, reconnect with one another, and recognise the progress made over three decades.
Town of Cambridge Mayor Gary Mack reflected on the Town’s achievements, noting how the split from the City of Perth allowed Cambridge to develop the unique character of its suburban areas, prioritise green spaces, and strengthen its financial position.
“The Town’s creation 30 years ago has allowed us to focus more effectively on the needs of our residents and local groups, while helping local businesses thrive. With over 40 per cent of our land dedicated to green spaces, our parks and gardens are recognised for benefitting our community and the broader city,” he said.
“We’ve developed a strategic community plan to generate our own income sources, with less than half of our revenue currently coming from rates. Financially, we’ve thrived as a local government authority, gaining social and economic advantages.”
Inaugural Mayor Ross Willcock JP also addressed the guests, sharing his memories and insights of the first days of the newly formed Council. Mr Willcock paid special tribute to the inaugural CEO, Graham Partridge.
“We must acknowledge the true founder of the Town, Graham Partridge, who was selected by the Commissioners to establish the Town ahead of the first election a year later. By the time of the election, all systems were in place and the process of building the Town’s Council Chambers was proceeding.”
The Town has achieved many milestones since its formation, including the opening of Cambridge Library and the Boulevard Centre in 2002, the modernisation of the Bold Park Aquatic Centre in 2016, and significant upgrades at Wembley Golf Course, which was this year named WA's top metropolitan golf facility.
Looking ahead, Mayor Mack said the Town remained focused on keeping Cambridge accessible and sustainable.
“From preserving our coastline and parks to planning for future needs, we will continue to serve our community and ensure the Town flourishes,” Mayor Mack concluded.
