Council's unsightly property clean-up campaign

As part of efforts to maintain the safety, health and appearance of the community, as well as to reduce the risk of fires during the Fire Danger Period that begins at 1am Monday, 4 November, Gannawarra Shire Council is undertaking a campaign to enforce unsightly property laws.

Categorised by having overgrown grass or vegetation, an excessive amount of household rubbish or discarded items, unmaintained or dilapidated fences and structures, and unregistered vehicles stored on-site, unsightly properties pose a danger to neighbouring residents.

“Council understands that the majority of our residents take the time to maintain their properties, but unsightly properties are more than an eyesore for neighbours,” Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amanda Wilson said.

“Unsightly properties can pose significant health risks to those living on these properties and their neighbours, as the overabundance of growth and items can pose a fire risk and, in the case of an emergency, hinder access to households.

“Unsightly properties also impact neighbouring properties thanks to potential offending odours and reduction of property values, which can affect the overall liveability of neighbourhoods.”

During the coming weeks, Council’s Local Laws team will travel throughout the municipality to conduct inspections and issue notices to properties that do not meet the current standards. Property owners found in breach will be contacted and given an opportunity to address the issues within a specified timeframe.

If the problem is not rectified, further enforcement action, including fines or council-directed clean-ups, may be taken.

“If you believe your property is an unsightly property, now is the time to act to remove or reduce the clutter or growth on your property,” Ms Wilson said.

“We understand that sometimes circumstances make it difficult to maintain properties, but we encourage residents to work with us to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.”

Residents concerned about unsightly properties in their neighbourhood can report them by contacting Council on (03) 5450 9333.
