Council holds its largest Australian Citizenship ceremony

Fourteen Gannawarra Shire Council residents became Australian citizens last night during the largest Australian Citizenship ceremony hosted by Council.

Held at the Kerang Senior Citizens Centre, the ceremony saw seven adults and seven children, representing various countries of birth, including Ghana, New Zealand, the Philippines and Zambia, pledge their allegiance to Australia and receive a citizenship certificate.

“Council congratulates our newest Australian citizens on this honour,” Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amanda Wilson said.

“The ceremony enabled our newest citizens, their family and friends to reflect on the journey they have taken to become Australian citizens and celebrate officially being a citizen of this great nation.”

The group of 14 brings the number of people who have become Australian citizens during ceremonies conducted by Council during 2024 to 27.

“An Australian Citizenship ceremony not only enables citizenship candidates to receive their Certificate of Australian Citizenship, but it also fulfils the requirements under Australian citizenship law and provides an opportunity for Gannawarra Shire Council to officially welcome its new citizens,” Ms Wilson said.

Council usually holds four ceremonies each year, including on Australia Day. Dates for ceremonies planned for 2025 will be confirmed by the end of the year.
