The state-owned Wellington Point jetty will be closed for approximately five weeks from 4 November to allow for urgent maintenance repairs by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ).

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said wooden sections of jetty, including beams and supports, had become worn and damaged over time.

“Structural components have been compromised due to rusting bolts and timber weathering,” she said.

“They need to be fixed or replaced to keep the jetty safe and usable for everyone.”

Stage one of MSQ’s repairs to the jetty’s marine piles is already underway and is being carried out underneath the structure via a floating barge.

From Monday 4 November, the full jetty will need to be closed to allow for repairs to timber headstocks, girders and other areas.

Subject to weather conditions, the closure will be for approximately five weeks.

Council is working in closely with MSQ to ensure repairs are completed before the high-demand season kicks in.

Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary said the work was necessary to prevent future costly repairs and to extend the jetty’s lifespan.

“It will hopefully re-open in time for the summer school holiday period with Stage 2 works to continue in the new year,” Cr Boglary said.
