New Cottesloe Shark Barrier installed for summer

The Town of Cottesloe’s new shark barrier is complete with installation commencing today (1 November).

Fisheries Minister Don Punch was in Cottesloe this morning, with the Town’s Deputy Mayor Melissa Harkins and representatives from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to see all the action!

The Town was successful in securing a grant of $400,000 from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development for the supply of a replacement barrier.

Following a tender process, Council awarded Eco Shark Barrier, the Town’s current suppliers, the contract to supply, install and maintain the shark barrier.

The replacement swimming enclosure for Cottesloe is in the same position and is the same length as the previous one. It is built off the groyne and stretches out 170 metres north from the groyne (along the coastline) and 140 metres from the shore.

Town of Cottesloe Mayor Lorraine Young said, “The Town of Cottesloe is delighted that the State government has funded the cost of a replacement shark barrier for Cottesloe beach, now that the original barrier has reached the end of its useful life.

“Cottesloe was an early adopter of this form of shark mitigation, with the Town meeting the full cost of installation and maintenance of the shark barrier over the last five years.

“The protected swimming enclosure at Cottesloe Main Beach is hugely popular, and the State’s contribution to peace-of-mind swimming at Cottesloe is welcomed by our community and the many hundreds of thousands of visitors we welcome here every year.” Mayor Young added.
