Council supports women and girls to get active

Colac Otway Shire Council is supporting a range of free events during This Girl Can Week (10 – 17 November) to celebrate and encourage all women to get active.

This Girl Can Week is a VicHealth initiative which supports Victorian women to embrace physical activity in a way that suits them, without fear of judgement.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Anne Howard said this year’s theme “Together We’re Unstoppable” is about demonstrating the incredible things that happen when women get active together.

“Research shows that a lot of women face barriers to getting involved in physical activity like fearing judgement or not having safe and welcoming spaces to get active in.

“We want to support opportunities for women of all abilities, ages and cultural backgrounds to come together, break down these barriers, and have some fun in safe, inclusive and welcoming environments,” she said.

“I encourage all women and girls in our community to get together and join one of the free events on offer as part of This Girl Can Week.”

Bluewater Leisure Centre is hosting a range of free sessions, including a belly dancing class, accessible yoga and a women’s only swimming evening.

They are also offering free childcare to support women to come along and try one of their free sessions, as well as competitions and prizes on offer during the week.
