Council seeks public input on Growth Strategy

For a number of years, the West Tamar municipality has been one of the fastest growing regions in the state.

And now, the West Tamar Council is seeking the community's feedback to assist with its inaugural Growth Strategy.

Mayor Christina Holmdahl said the purpose of the Strategy is to enable sustainable growth for the West Tamar region over the next 30 years and beyond.

"There are a number of towns in our municipality that are growing at a steady pace - none more so than Legana, which is regarded as one of the fastest growing suburbs in Tasmania," Mayor Holmdahl said.

"We need to make certain that as our regions continue to grow, that we have a 'roadmap in place to manage that growth while balancing the protection of natural spaces and the places that make West Tamar an amazing place to live, work and invest."

Council has engaged SGS Economics and Planning to assist with the development of the Growth Strategy.

Mayor Holmdahl said the Strategy will consider where and how the municipality should accommodate growth, and the infrastructure and community services needed to support this growth.

"Several growth scenarios will be investigated and interrogated and we will consult with the community in a number of ways," Mayor Holmdahl said.

"That community and stakeholder feedback and technical analysis of each growth scenario is key in determining a preferred growth scenario for the West Tamar municipality."

The Strategy will give Council a clear strategic direction on future growth, and will also assist developers, landowners, planning consultants and Council in preparing and assessing Scheme Amendment proposals for the rezoning of land.

Community consultation will include a series of five workshops at Exeter, Beauty Point, Riverside and Legana, as well as a survey and a general request for feedback via the Council's website.

"We really encourage anyone with a keen interest in how they see our beautiful region growing to get involved and provide us with their thoughts and their vision for the West Tamar into the future.
