Albany’s commitment to environmental sustainability, community action, and wellbeing has been recognised, with three local projects being named finalists in the 2024 Tidy Towns Awards.

The Stuff You Need to Know project is a finalist in the Community Action and Wellbeing category and was developed as part of the City of Albany’s Youth Friendly Albany Plan.

The project offers life skills training for young people to support their transition into independent living via nine educational videos created on topics including budgeting, meal planning, and rentals 101.

The City’s Youth Advisory Council in collaboration with local businesses, schools, and experts, developed the online series making it accessible to young people and relevant to a broad audience.

The Environmental Sustainability category finalist is the Community Bushcarer Busy Bee Groups, made up of volunteers dedicated to preserving Albany’s natural bushland.

Supported by the City’s Natural Reserves team, these passionate volunteers are essential in protecting Albany’s reserves, including Barmup, Yakamia, Frenchman Bay, and Lake Seppings.

In the Litter Action category, the Friday Litter Collections by Just Bin It volunteers have been recognised for over 30 years of dedication to keeping Albany’s roadsides and open spaces clean.

Collecting around 500 bags of litter annually, this group has made a significant impact that has led to securing funding for trial litter traps, aiming for long-term litter solutions. Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks praised the efforts of all involved.

“Albany’s achievements in the Tidy Towns Awards reflect the passion and hard work of our community’s natural environment”, he said.

“Whether it’s supporting young people with life skills, preserving our beautiful bushland, or keeping our streets clean, these initiatives show what can be accomplished when we come together.

“I am incredibly proud of everyone involved.”
