The City of Wanneroo is calling for government support to deliver vital community infrastructure in Alkimos, Girrawheen and Wanneroo.

Ahead of the 2025 State and Federal elections, the City is advocating for investment in three essential community facilities to enhance liveability for residents, cater for the rapid growth of the area and ensure the region continues to thrive.

The three key projects will boost liveability and bring exciting new facilities to our growing northern corridor.

Girrawheen Hub Precinct

Redevelopment of the 1.37ha Girrawheen Hub Precinct will create an accessible multi-purpose space that provides opportunities for new activities, uses, tenants and community groups, and incorporates the existing uses of the hub, library, community centre and community garden.

Total project costs for the redevelopment of the Girrawheen Precinct are estimated to be $30 million. The City will contribute $9.5 million and is seeking $20.5 million from government partners.

Wanneroo Recreation Precinct

The City is seeking $22.7 million to help fund the redevelopment of the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre to create a Wanneroo Recreation Precinct that includes a co-located Sports Hub and Community Hub.

Total project costs are estimated to be $35.5 million, with the City to contribute $7.8 million and $5 million already secured from the State Government.

Alkimos Regional Open Space

This $94 million construction project will deliver regional level sporting facilities and amenities including baseball/softball diamonds, netball courts, soccer and rugby fields, junior rectangular fields, hockey fields, five sport pavilions, two playgrounds, a community purpose site and a dog exercise area.

The City has allocated $26 million to the project and is seeking a further $68 million.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the City needed investment in these facilities to keep up with the needs of our growing population, strengthen our communities and improve quality of life for our residents.

“There are currently no regional level sporting precincts north of Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex, which leaves the City’s outer-metro residents at a disadvantage as they’re forced to travel long distances to access facilities,” she said.

“The Girrawheen project will provide crucial social support for our diverse local communities, and the Wanneroo redevelopment will not only accommodate a growing need for these facilities in the area but will function as an evacuation centre for civil emergencies such as bushfires.

“We've committed $43.3 million to these three projects, but it’s not enough. We’re calling on the State and Federal governments to support our vision and provide the investment we need to bring these projects to life.”

The City is encouraging residents to get involved and support the campaign by sending an email to State and Federal representatives showing the strong community support for these essential facilities.

Together, we can bring these facilities to life and ensure our City remains a vibrant, connected and liveable place for all.
