City launches the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative
City of Fremantle 6 Dec 2024

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, also known as invisible disabilities.

People can choose to wear the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower as a lanyard, wristband or badge.

Over the coming months, the City will be introducing the initiative across all the City’s facilities, upskilling staff and building capacity for disability inclusion in City programs.

The City’s Access and Inclusion Officer Courtney Rosato said the intent is to raise awareness and set a positive example for other organisations, departments, and local governments.

“The initiative provides a simple yet powerful way to foster understanding and create an environment where people with non-visible disabilities can feel seen, heard, and supported.

“Having been involved in this initiative on the east coast, it is deeply exciting to now lead its implementation here in WA.

“This rollout is an incredibly personal and meaningful moment for me as a neurodivergent individual.

“It’s more than just a symbol, it’s a tool for unlearning ableism, challenging preconceived notions, and creating spaces where everyone feels valued.

“I’m proud to be part of this journey, helping lead the way to a more neuroaffirming and inclusive community, where differences are not just accepted but celebrated, and where we continuously strive to break down barriers and promote inclusion for all,” Ms Rosato said.

Hidden disabilities can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties. They can also be respiratory as well as chronic health conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, chronic pain and sleep disorders.

Joining the initiative reflects the City’s commitment to building an inclusive community where everyone feels welcome and understood.
